The Quantum Geometer’s Universe: Particles, Interactions and Topology

چکیده

With the two most profound conceptual revolutions of XX century physics, quantum mechanics and relativity, which have culminated into relativistic spacetime geometry and quantum gauge field theory as the principles for gravity and the three other known fundamental interactions, the physicist of the XXI century has inherited an unfinished symphony: the unification of the quantum and the continuum. As an invitation to tomorrow’s quantum geometers who must design the new rulers by which to size up the Universe at those scales where the smallest meets the largest, these lectures review the basic principles of today’s conceptual framework, and highlight by way of simple examples the interplay that presently exists between the quantum world of particle interactions and the classical world of geometry and topology. To be published in the Proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Contemporary Problems in Mathematical Physics, Institut de Mathématiques et de Sciences Physiques (IMSP), Université d’Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, Republic of Benin October 28st November 2th, 2001

On the Road towards the Quantum Geometer’s Universe: an Introduction to Four-dimensional Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theory

The organisers of the third edition of the COPROMAPH Workshops had thought it worthwhile to have the second series of lectures during the weeklong meeting dedicated to an introduction to supersymmetric quantum field theories. An internationally renowned expert in the field had been invited, and was to deliver the course. Unfortunately, at the last minute fate had it decided otherwise, depriving...

Incompleteness of Quantum Theory on Einstein’s Program

The Standard Model of particles, experimentally validated by the Higgs boson detection, represents the crowning of quantum theory. It is admitted that the whole universe is composed of fundamental particles, at one and the same time for matter and for three out of the four different interactions. They all manifest experimentally either as waves or as particles, justifying that they leans upon a...

Modification of the field theory and the dark matter problem

We present an extension of the field theory onto the case in which the topology of space can vary. We show that the nontrivial topology of space displays itself in a multivalued nature of all observable fields and the number of fields becomes an additional degree of freedom. In the limit in which topology changes are suppressed, the number of fields is conserved and the Modified Field Theory (M...

Birth of a Closed Universe of Negative Spatial Curvature

We propose a modified form of the spontanteous birth of the universe by quantum tunneling. It proceeds through topology change and inflation, to eventually become a universe with closed spatial sections of negative spatial curvature and nontrivial global topology.

Evolution of Information and Complexity in an Ever-Expanding Universe

Using the usual definitions of information and entropy in quantum gravity and statistical mechanics and the existing views about the relation between information and complexity, we examine the evolution of complexity in an ever expanding universe.
